Micro-shading in Brighton combines fine hair strokes with soft shading for brows that need more definition. I can put shading between sparse hairs, through the middle or towards the tail. We’ll decide how much you want after I’ve looked at your brows with you.

What happens at your appointment

You’ll have my attention for the whole appointment in my private room in Patcham. We’ll start with a consultation, look at your natural brow hair and talk about the finish you want. If you usually fill in your brows, you can show me how you do it.

I’ll map the shape to your face and ask you to check it in the mirror. If something feels wrong, tell me and we’ll change the drawing before I start. After numbing, I’ll create hair strokes and add soft shading where we’ve agreed it will help. Shading can sit mainly in the middle and tail, or run more evenly through the brow.

The first session takes 1 hour 30 minutes. Your brows will change while they heal, so the colour you see on the day isn’t the final result. At the included perfecting session, I’ll check how the pigment has settled and make adjustments if needed.

Is it right for you

Micro-shading can suit you if microblading hair strokes alone would leave your brows looking too sparse. It can also suit oilier skin, where strokes may heal less clearly. If you want a shaded brow without hair strokes, look at powder brows. My guide to microblading and powder brows explains the finishes.

I’m qualified in beauty therapy, and I earned my Makeup Artistry BA (Hons) in 2012. I have insurance for my treatments. Brighton & Hove City Council has registered me for semi-permanent make-up. I use each blade once and work with disposable equipment.

I can consider correcting another artist’s semi-permanent brows once I’ve seen photographs of them. It depends on how saturated they are, and I don’t offer removal. My top-ups are for existing clients only.

I cannot treat you if you’re under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have uncontrolled diabetes or a skin condition in the brow area. Botox in the past month also rules out treatment. Read the full list under “Who cannot have it” on my semi-permanent brows page before you book.

Price and what it includes

Micro-shading costs £350. That includes the consultation, brow mapping, numbing, the first session and one perfecting session 4 to 6 weeks later. I take a £75 deposit when you book and deduct it from the price on the day. Tell me at least 48 hours before your appointment if you need to cancel or change it, and I can refund your deposit or move it to a new date. The price list shows the treatment price too.

Before you come

New clients need a free patch test at least 24 hours before treatment. It takes 10 to 15 minutes. If you haven’t had the patch test, I cannot carry out the appointment.

Stop using Vitamin A products, glycolic acids and exfoliants on the brow area for at least two weeks beforehand. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, aspirin and ibuprofen for 24 hours before treatment. If a GP prescribes a medicine, speak to me before changing it.

Aftercare

  • During the first 7 days, keep water off your brows as much as you can and wash around them.
  • Leave flakes alone. Don’t pick or scratch the brow area.
  • Use aftercare product lightly rather than covering the brows.
  • Stay out of saunas, pools and steam rooms for the first 7 days. Leave facials and skin treatments until after that week.
  • Keep retinol acids and AHAs off the area for 30 days.

The microblading aftercare guide also covers micro-shading.

Questions clients ask

What is micro-shading?

Micro-shading combines microbladed hair strokes with small areas of soft shading. The shading gives a little more depth where hair strokes alone might leave gaps.

What’s the difference between microblading and micro-shading?

Microblading gives the look of individual brow hairs. Micro-shading keeps those strokes and adds a softer, filled-in effect. I can place the shading to suit your natural hair and the finish you want.

Do I need it?

You may like micro-shading if you regularly fill in your brows or have very little brow hair. You don’t have to choose the boldest finish. I’ll help you judge the shape and amount of shading before treatment.

We can start with your natural brows and decide how much definition feels right.
