Lash extension aftercare helps you keep the set clean and looking even as your natural lashes shed. The first day matters most for the adhesive bond. After that, gentle cleaning and careful make-up removal make the routine easier.

The first 24 hours

Keep your extensions dry for 24 hours after I apply them. Avoid hot steam from showers, saunas and hot tubs during that time. Try not to touch the lashes more than you need to.

Don’t pick or pull at an extension. It’s attached to a natural lash, and pulling can damage that lash. If you want the set removed, book a removal appointment.

Cleaning your lashes

Clean the lashes and eye area gently with an oil-free cleanser. Close your eyes and move the cleanser through the lids and lashes in one direction, away from the roots. Rinse with water.

Brush through the extensions regularly with a clean lash brush to keep them defined. Be gentle when you remove eye make-up. Don’t drag cotton wool or a cotton pad across the extensions, and don’t use an oil-based remover.

Mascara and make-up

You probably won’t need mascara because the extensions already add darkness and fullness. If you let your set grow out without infills, you can wear mascara that isn’t waterproof. Use a water-based formula; tubing mascara is fine if it isn’t waterproof. Put it on from the middle towards the tips, rather than at the roots.

Avoid waterproof or oil-based mascara. It can be difficult to remove, clump the extensions and interfere with the adhesive bond. For an infill, arrive with no mascara on your lashes. If you’ve worn it, shower it all off before the appointment. Otherwise, the glue may not hold and your lashes may shed sooner. Even after cleaning, leftover product can affect how well the new extensions stay on.

Swimming, steam and the gym

You can swim after the first 24 hours. You can also shower and wash your face, taking care not to rub the lashes. Heat and humidity may shorten how long the extensions stay looking full, so bear that in mind around steam or on holiday.

Keep oily products, including sun cream, away from the lashes. Oil can interfere with the adhesive.

Shedding and the seasons

Your natural lashes shed, and the extensions attached to them shed too. You may see more gaps at some times than others. Some clients notice more shedding in spring and autumn and book their next infill sooner.

Don’t pull out an extension when you spot a gap. Let it shed, then have the set filled. The timing varies with your lashes and your aftercare.

When to book an infill

Most clients book an infill every 2 to 3 weeks. An infill fills gaps and tidies extensions that no longer sit neatly. I offer infills only for my existing clients. A mini infill is available within one week.

If you’re choosing your next set, read about lash extensions or use my lash extension styles guide. You can book online when you’re ready.
