Lash shedding season can make extensions fall out sooner in spring and autumn. I see it in my clients each year, and it passes. If your set suddenly looks patchier, that change alone doesn’t mean it was applied badly. Each extension sits on a natural lash, so it leaves when that lash sheds. During a seasonal shed, you may need your next infill a little earlier.

What is lash shedding season?

It’s the name I use for the faster loss of lashes I see in spring and autumn. Your extensions can look less full sooner than you expect, even if you haven’t changed how you care for them. I understand why that feels worrying when you’ve only recently had a set fitted.

My explanation is that the body sheds hair, including lashes, as the seasons change. I see the effect in clients twice a year. It’s temporary, though the amount of shedding differs from person to person.

I notice it most in spring. It shows most clearly with extensions because they make your natural lashes stand out, so a sparse lash line is easier to see. A lash lift looks more natural, which makes the change less obvious. You may still need to have a lift redone sooner during this period.

Why do my extensions fall out with my lashes?

Your natural lashes keep shedding, even with extensions on. When one falls out, the extension I attached to it comes along. The extension isn’t pulling the natural lash out.

Roughly two to three natural lashes shed each day. Over a few weeks, that can leave visible gaps in a set of extensions. Some people notice those gaps sooner than others. It’s why most of my clients book an infill every 2 to 3 weeks, even when there isn’t a seasonal shed.

Seeing an extension with a natural lash attached can look alarming. On its own, that’s the usual way an extension leaves. Please don’t pick or pull at one that’s still attached. Let it shed.

How long will the faster shedding last?

From what I see, lashes usually return to their normal pace after about six weeks, often after one or two infills. Your set may need a little more attention during that period, but things go back to normal.

Be patient with your lashes. I know that’s easier to say when I’m not the one spotting a gap in the mirror, but the faster shed won’t last long.

Should I book an infill sooner?

Yes, booking your next infill a little sooner than usual can help you keep the set looking full while the shed passes. If you need a small top-up between regular infills, my mini infill is for a visit within one week. It takes 45 minutes and costs £25.

A classic infill or a silk or cashmere infill costs £30 and takes 1 hour. A hybrid infill costs £35 and takes 1 hour 15 minutes. A Russian volume infill costs £40 and takes 1 hour 15 minutes. You can check the other treatment details on my price list.

I offer infills to my existing clients only. If you’re unsure which appointment fits the gaps you’re seeing, text me before you book.

Could it be my aftercare instead?

It could be worth checking your aftercare if extensions aren’t lasting as you expect. Rubbing or picking at the extensions can make a set last less time, as can a lot of heat or steam. So can waterproof or oil-based mascara, or oil-based products near your lashes such as make-up remover and sun cream. My lash extension aftercare guide covers what to do between appointments.

If you’re worried about what you’re seeing, text me on 07824 376549. I can help you decide what to book at my studio in Patcham, Brighton. You’ll find the treatment and infill details on my lash extensions page.
